Smart marketing, the Acer way

Acer reliability promise: 50% refund on broken notebooks

Follow us on @openmarketingTV

I first read about marketing in the seventies of the past millennium. Since then I visited many press conferences and honestly, most of the times I was rather bored. In my opinion smart marketing is about products that stand out and are put to market and communicated in an out of the box fashion.

Only then I wake up. That´s what I did this morning. I´m not a gambling man, but when a large corporation like Acer is putting money on the quality of their products, that is something I can relate to. Here´s the story.

Acer Reliability Promise

Acer today announced enhancements to the ‘Acer Reliability Promise’program targeted especially at Small and Medium Businesses / SoHo covering its TravelMate commercial notebook range. Customers purchasing a qualifying Acer TravelMate commercial notebook between November 1 until June 30, 2014 are eligible to claim a 50% refund if the product fails and needs repair under warranty within the first year.

In the commercial segment, Acer’s goal is to continue to innovate and build the most reliable products to support SMBs through to the largest enterprise users,” said Jakob Olsen, vicepresident, commercial division, Acer Europe.“

Reliability

Acer makes high quality products, so in the unlikely event that something goes wrong in the first year, we can afford to commit through the ‘Acer Reliability Promise’ program to replace or repair your PC and refund customers 50% for any inconvenience.”

Acer Reliability Promise’ is part of the company’s continued and strategic investment in the commercial business segment and targeting enterprise, public sector and SMB customers and aims to set the industry standard for quality and reliability.

Registration

The program, initially launched in August, has now been extended to June 2014 and covers additional products as well as a more flexible registration process.

The details of the new program include:

Reliability Promise: If a qualifying Acer TravelMate develops a fault in the first year and is repaired under warranty, Acer promises to fix it free of charge and refund 50% of the purchasing price for up to 50 PCs per end-user company.

Qualifying period: For purchased and qualifying products between November 1, 2013 until June 30, 2014.

Register: The customer must register within 30 days of purchase to qualify.

Qualifying products: TravelMate P2 series, including the new P255; TravelMate X313, TravelMate P4 series, including the new P455; and TravelMate P6 series, including the new P645.

2014 OpenSDx Summit rattles up the legacy storage snakes

Watch Tarkan Maner, CEO Nexenta, open the #OpenSDx 2014Summit (camera: Acer A1 830)

If you have stock in NetApp or EMC, reconsider your stock position asap because Nexenta is going to beat up the bushes an rattle the legacy storage snakes tremendously. Nexenta`s outspoken CEO and investor Tarkan Maner, made that very clear at the 2014 OpenSDx Summit in the Hilton Doubletree hotel in Amsterdam the Netherlands.

Storage by tradition is one of the most costly components of computing. SDx, Software defined anything is going to change that dramatically. Nexenta is one of the leading companies in that field. Nexenta´s success is based on a couple of pillars. One is the fact that legacy and coostly hardware ca be replaced by standard hardware like SuperMicro Dell or Quanta.

The second cost reducing factor is the software only architecture. No closed environments but Open Source software in a hybrid customer setting where you can start for free using the community version of an open source product and changing to a healthy SLA contract when you go into production.

VMware

VMware, market leader in virtualization is a strong supporter of Nexenta and Nexenta has a range of possibilities for VMware sysadmins. At the OpenSDx summit VMware in the person of Spencer Pitts emphazised that VMware is evoluating towards end User computing where VMware is usually associated with dataccenters. This is a trend thatshuld not be underestimated. Manigig the end use experience is a costly affair and the alliance between VMware and Nexenta can drive downcosts of computing tremendously.

This morning Microsoft announced that its Board of Directors has selected Satya Nadella as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer

Microsoft announces new CEO Satya Nadella

Bill Gates steps up to new role as Technology Advisor; John Thompson assumes role as Chairman of Board of Directors.

Satya Nadella
This morning Microsoft announced that its Board of Directors has selected Satya Nadella as the company’s new Chief Executive Officer. He will assume the role of CEO and join the Board of Directors, effective immediately. Satya is a 22-year Microsoft veteran and most recently oversaw Microsoft’s Cloud and Enterprise group, one of the company’s fastest growing and most profitable businesses.

“During this time of transformation, there is no better person to lead Microsoft than Satya Nadella,” said Bill Gates, Microsoft’s Founder and Member of the Board of Directors. “Satya is a proven leader with hard-core engineering skills, business vision and the ability to bring people together. His vision for how technology will be used and experienced around the world is exactly what Microsoft needs as the company enters its next chapter of expanded product innovation and growth.”

Since joining the company in 1992, Nadella has spearheaded major strategy and technical shifts across the company’s portfolio of products and services, most notably the company’s move to the cloud and the development of one of the largest cloud infrastructures in the world supporting Bing, Xbox, Office and other services. During his tenure overseeing Microsoft’s Server and Tools Business, the division outperformed the market and took share from competitors.

“Microsoft is one of those rare companies to have truly revolutionized the world through technology, and I couldn’t be more honored to have been chosen to lead the company,” Nadella said. “The opportunity ahead for Microsoft is vast, but to seize it, we must focus clearly, move faster and continue to transform. A big part of my job is to accelerate our ability to bring innovative products to our customers more quickly.”

“Having worked with him for more than 20 years, I know that Satya is the right leader at the right time for Microsoft,” said Steve Ballmer, who announced on Aug. 23, 2013 that he would retire once a successor was named. “I’ve had the distinct privilege of working with the most talented employees and senior leadership team in the industry, and I know their passion and hunger for greatness will only grow stronger under Satya’s leadership.”

Microsoft also announced that Bill Gates, previously Chairman of the Board of Directors, will assume a new role on the Board as Founder and Technology Advisor, and will devote more time to the company, supporting Nadella in shaping technology and product direction. John Thompson, lead independent director for the Board of Directors, will assume the role of Chairman of the Board of Directors and remain an independent director on the Board.

“Satya is clearly the best person to lead Microsoft, and he has the unanimous support of our Board,” Thompson said. “The Board took the thoughtful approach that our shareholders, customers, partners and employees expected and deserved.”

With the addition of Nadella, Microsoft’s Board of Directors consists of Ballmer; Dina Dublon, former Chief Financial Officer of JPMorgan Chase; Gates; Maria M. Klawe, President of Harvey Mudd College; Stephen J. Luczo, Chairman and Chief Executive Officer of Seagate Technology PLC; David F. Marquardt, General Partner at August Capital; Nadella; Charles H. Noski, former Vice Chairman of Bank of America Corp.; Dr. Helmut Panke, former Chairman of the Board of Management at BMW Bayerische Motoren Werke AG; and Thompson, Chief Executive Officer of Virtual Instruments. Seven of the 10 board members are independent of Microsoft, which is consistent with the requirement in the company’s governance guidelines that a substantial majority be independent.

The times that Open Source Software was looked upon as something for geeks only are long gone. Open source has now a pervasive presence in virtually every aspect of business computing. The Amsterdam Open Source conference is one of the European gatherings where professionals exhibit their latest developments. Founded by Red Hat and Accenture, the last conference was co-sponsored by names as IBM and HP, indicating the interest of the established IT community

The new economy

,,Growing business demands – for web and mobile, big data, and end-user services – are forcing IT to change. The rules of business are changing. Everyone has to do more – while still cutting costs. Every part of your organization needs scalable, responsive IT systems that don’t inhibit innovation and your traditional infrastructure has to be fast and flexible to support today’s (and tomorrow’s) workloads. You want to be ready for new opportunities as they come along.´´

This mantra of the new economy that open source enables was highlighted in the 2012 conference in an excellent manner by speakers as Neelie kroes, EU Commissioner and Harry van Dorenmalen, Chairman IBM Europe. When you doubt that Open Source is a serious business, just take  a look at this video´s, recorded at the Open Source conference 2012. For a broad look at the open source discussion see the round table discussion video on open source.

Neelie Kroes

Neelie Kroes:,, ICT is developing in a breathtaking pace, from the incredible smartphones to the opportunities of cloud computing. There are more innovative products and services out there. There are huge benefits of open source and open standards. When software is not based on open technologies, it is harder to let them work together , to modify and customize them and harder to change providers. In fact, the cost of closed ICT systems is estimated at several hundred million a year for  the public sector alone.”

Open Source Conference 2012: Neelie Kroes on Open Source and Open Standards

Harry van Dorenmalen

Technology has never been more important for business, and Linux and other open technologies have been at the forefront of solving IT challenges over the past decade. In this presentation, Harry van Dorenmalen will review the impact of open computing on the data center and the reasons for its success. In this video he will also discuss three key open technologies that will influence the next era of computing — open virtualization, big data, and the open cloud.

Open Source Conference 2012: Harry van Dorenmalen, Chairman IBM Europe

Snowden: Stuxnet was developed by NSA and Israel

Malware 2.0: Stuxnet explained by Paula Januszkiewicz

Der Spiegel interview with Snowden

The script kiddies are of the past and Stuxnet, the malware that was hated like the plaque by Iran, illustrated that a new era of malware production was immanent. In the wake of the Snowden whistle blowing, the German magazine ,,Der Spiegel” (The mirror) will reveal in an interview with Snowden that Stuxnet was an enterprise undertaken by the NSA and the Israeli government. This PDF (German) explains it all.

Stuxnet

Stuxnet made use of a number of vulnerabilities in Windows and the designers did that in a complex but totally logic way. It is especially interesting to see how Stuxnet uses every possible way to get around security in Windows XP. For nerds, the way Stuxnet works shows how security can be breached in almost every environment thinkable. Erie? Just watch this video of security expert Paula Januszkiewicz, recorded on the Microsoft TechDays 2013, the Netherlands.

Goodbye NSA with Raspberry PI

The Raspberry PI has many qualities and ADAFRUIT added a WiFi TOR proxy to this little wonder that routes all your traffic through TOR anonymously. All you need is a Raspberry PI and a WiFi adator to create the Onion PI private TOR gateway. Allthough this is fun to do, the makers can´t guarantee that you are truly anonymous 🙂 . The complete unit costs 94.95 dollar.
